Opened in April 2016 by chef Sheldon Simeon and his wife Janice, Tin Roof is a popular casual dining spot offering up delicious local grinds to be enjoyed al fresco. Known for the television show Top Chef, James Beard-nominated Simeon brings native Hawaiian tradition and five-star culinary flair to this charming neighborhood eatery. Sure, there are no tables inside, and just a handful of places to sit in a shared parking lot, but what Tin Roof lacks in abundant seating, it more than makes up for with the quality of its food. Expect fast and friendly service and top notch island fare at refreshingly affordable prices.
Working closely with local farmers, fisherman and ranchers, the food here takes inspiration from the islands’ rich and diverse culinary heritage, and delivers classic Hawaiian flavors with some unique twists. Comprised of the curiously named Kau Kau Tins (a pidgin English phrase used historically to describe a Hawaiian plantation lunch container), a handful of dishes under the collective title ‘Other Grinds’ and daily chef’s specials such as Tuscan Fettuccine with Blackened Cod and Chicken & Portuguese Sausage Gumbo with Shrimp, Simeon’s menu is laden with casual and delicious comfort food that won’t break the bank.
Bestseller Mochiko Chicken takes some beating, as does the Pork Belly, Garlic Shrimp, Fish Sando and the Chocolate Birthday Bibingka. But you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. And don’t just take our word for it; the long line of hungry islanders snaking its way out of the door is testament to the high regard in which this bustling counter is held by the community it serves.
Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 until 20:00, Tin Roof - led by its charismatic husband and wife team - has, along with a handful of other local spots, gone some way to filling the void in cheap, high-quality places to eat on the island of Maui. Order online to bypass the queues, or stand in line with in-the-know locals to get your fix of incredible Hawaiian soul food. We promise, you won’t be disappointed…
