Founded by husband and wife Floyd and Doris Christenson in 1973, and named to distinguish itself from what was, at the time, a steak-dominated restaurant scene on the island, Mama’s quickly began to build an excellent reputation for its locally-caught fish, prepared one of six ways.
From the early days, the menu included the name of the fishermen and the location of the catch alongside each item, a personal touch that seemed to appeal to the island’s new army of young hospitality workers, and which still promotes Maui’s sustainable fishing industry to this day. As tourism continued to grow in the late 1970s and 1980s, Mama’s grew with it, moving beyond being simply a neighborhood restaurant, to establishing itself as an industry leader in quality Hawaiian-caught seafood and fish.
Today, it is widely regarded as a pioneer of fresh island cuisine and one of the best places to eat on Maui. The daily menu - though somewhat more complex than when the restaurant was in its infancy - continues to showcase authentic Polynesian flavors, with dishes such as Wild Caught Crispy Whole Fish, Mama’s Ahi and Mahi-Mahi Curry, and Hawaiian Kanpachi with Crab & Lobster in a Macadamia Nut Crust amongst our personal favorites. Other highlights include the Lobster Bisque, Macadamia Nut Crab Cakes, and the much-heralded Mama’s Bouillabaisse, frequently described by diners as the best they’ve ever tasted!
Offerings from the restaurant’s dessert card are equally delicious with Lilikoʻi Crème Brulée, Coconut Chiffon Cake and Hana Banana Macadamia Nut Crisp amongst an impressive choice of sweet treats, and the exceptional standard of food is matched by a carefully curated cocktail list and flawless service. Guests wanting to experience Mama’s famous hospitality and traditional Polynesian island aesthetic for more than a meal can opt to stay at Mama’s Inn - a collection of twelve cottages and suites directly on the beach.
Revered for the quality and freshness of its fish, as well as the creativity of its culinary team, Mama’s offers a first-class fine dining experience in a laid back, open-air setting. Located along the scenic road to Hana, around one and a half miles from the charming town of Pāʻia, this old style Hawaiian institution is your go-to place on Maui for exquisitely-prepared top-tier fish and seafood…
